We all know that Moses was the great lawgiver, but did you know he was also a songwriter? He wrote several songs, including the poignant Psalm 90, in which he offered the prayer: “So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom” (v.12).
As Moses neared the end of his life, knowing he would not enter the Promised Land, he gathered the congregation of Israel before him and sang a song of 43 verses recorded in Deuteronomy 32. As with any good song, Moses began with worship of the Lord: “Ascribe you greatness unto our God. He is the Rock; his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: A God of truth, and without iniquity, just and right is he” (vv.3-4).
But in the very next verse, he lamented that the people had corrupted themselves—they are morally stained—a perverse and crooked generation. He declared: “O foolish people and unwise, is not the Lord your father? Has he not made you and established you?”
In the following 20 verses, Moses sang of their 40-year journey in the wilderness and how the Lord led them, instructed them, and kept them as the apple of his eye. But they provoked Him to jealousy with strange gods and new gods, and abominations, and forgot the God who formed them. Then Moses added his commentary:
“For they are a nation void of counsel, neither is there any understanding in them. O that they were wise, that they understood this, that they would consider their latter end” (vv.28-29).
Heavy words—heavy warning! “O that they…” You can hear the yearning in his tone. If they had only understood! If they had only considered the ramifications of their rebellion! But they did not learn from their 400 years of captivity in Egypt, nor from their forty-year trek in the wilderness. Eventually, she would slide into a cycle of sin and debauchery. From time to time, God raised up prophets and mighty heroes, and a few good kings, and the nation enjoy prosperity and blessings, especially during the golden reign of Solomon. But they always returned to their backsliding.
Ultimately, the nation was divided into two kingdoms. Israel, made up of 10 northern tribes, when into captivity first. Judah, with two southern tribes, when into captivity 150 years later. Then came 400 years of silence with no message from Heaven.
O that they would have considered their latter end!
“Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people” (Proverbs 14:34). From the Golden age of Solomon when of his glory “the half has not been told,” to Zedekiah, whom Nebuchadnezzar forced to watch his children be killed in front of him, and then put out his eyes, and took him to Babylon in chains, the latter and was bitter indeed. The glorious Temple Solomon had built for the presence of God to dwell amongst them, was ransacked, its treasures taken to Babylon, and its edifice destroyed.
“The wicked shall be turned into hell and all the nations that forget God” (Proverbs 9:17). Not one will escape the judgment of God, nor the damnation of Hell—O that they would consider their latter end!
“All nations” —America will not escape the judgment of God. When you preach this today, you will face harsh pushback. It is highly offensive, not just to the world—I get that, but in the Church at large, you will be condemned for daring to suggest that America will be judged for her sins. It is become as though such an idea is preposterous. Where would anyone get such an unpopular message? From the Bible! From Psalm 9:17!
Warning to Rebellious Nations
“He rules by his power forever: His eyes behold the nations. Let not the rebellious exalt themselves” (Psalm 66:7). America has become corrupt with sexual abomination, abortion, imported gods of other nations, including Islam that is swiftly exerting great political power under the guise of nondiscrimination. She is falling farther and farther from the ways of God. No longer does anyone dance around their support for abortion. It has become the trumpet sound of one political party. They brazenly broadcast their intention to make abortion the new human right, even up to the very moment of birth, and force Christians to pay for it. And it is gone beyond this to infanticide which was one of the horrific practices of the pagan nations that God destroyed in the ancient world. Child sacrifice was one of the sins that brought the wrath of God on a backslidden Israel. In some states, if a baby survives the abortion and is delivered live, they can be killed and still be considered an abortion.
“If the foundations be destroyed, what shall the righteous do?” (Psalm 11:2). The foundations of righteousness America was built upon are crumbling. Marriage as God designed it has become a union of “that which is against nature and vile affections.” The life of the unborn has no value. All things Christian are being removed from public places so as not to offend the godless. Truth has become whatever you make it, no matter how absurd or unsubstantiated. The Bible is banned, mocked, or twisted to fit seared consciences.
Proverbs 11:4 declares: The Lord is in his holy temple; the Lord’s throne is in heaven: His eyes behold, his eyelids try the children of men.” He beholds those who are destroying the foundations of righteousness this nation was built on. And He is watching to see what the righteous are going to do about it: Will we rise up? Will we lift up our voices to cry aloud, and spare not? “When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; but when the wicked bear rule, the people mourn” (Proverbs 29:2).
“And who will rise up for me against the evildoers? Or who will stand up for me against the workers of iniquity?…. Shall the throne of iniquity have fellowship with you, which frames mischief by law? The throne of iniquity is any government that upholds wrong and defends wickedness by their authority and enactment of laws. God will not be in alliance with her, nor sanction nations or laws that are against righteousness and that support iniquity. Therefore, they must fall.
“It is time for you to work, Lord, for they have made void your law” (Psalm 119:126). They have made void the laws of our Creator: the life of the unborn, gender identity, biblical marriage, and have shoved other gods, including satanic goats, in His face.
O that she would consider her latter end! “Blessed is the nation whose God is the lord!” (Psalm 33:8).
O that America would have understanding!
